TETHERTARP™ MASTER PRODUCT GUIDE: INSTALLATION, SAFETY & WARRANTY
EMERGENCY WATER MITIGATION NOTICE
Tethertarp is engineered strictly as a temporary, emergency storm-mitigation asset. Its legal and mechanical purpose is to assist in minimizing and reducing the severity of water ingress following a catastrophic event until permanent roof repairs can be executed.
Tethertarp is
not
an engineered, permanently sealed, or permanent roofing membrane. Due to the unpredictable nature of storm damage, structural shifts, and varying roof profiles, Tethertarp does not guarantee an absolute, bone-dry seal against all moisture. By deploying this system, the installer and property owner acknowledge that this is a temporary, best-efforts mitigation measure, and Tethertarp Pty Ltd accepts no liability for residual water ingress or minor weeping during severe weather events.
PART 1: SYSTEM INSTALLATION & SAFETY MANUAL
Important Notice:
Tethertarp is a professional-grade product. To ensure safety, structural integrity, and warranty compliance, Tethertarp must only be installed by a licensed and qualified trade professional who is trained in working at heights and fully compliant with local Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations.
1. CRITICAL WHS SAFETY WARNING: SLIP & TRIP HAZARDS
Working at heights is inherently dangerous. Installation of Tethertarp introduces specific environmental hazards that must be actively managed by the licensed installer in compliance with local Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations.
- Severe Slip Hazard: Tethertarp is manufactured with a smooth polymer surface. This surface becomes extremely slick and slippery when wet, dewy, frosted, or dusty. Installers must never step, walk, stand, or kneel directly on the smooth tarp fabric unless utilizing fully compliant fall prevention system. Standard roofing footwear will lose traction on this material.
- Trip Hazard Warning: The integrated tethers, perimeter eyelets, anchoring ropes, and filled sandbags constitute substantial, raised trip hazards across the roof deck. Installers must maintain high situational awareness, keep the workspace organized, and ensure clear access paths are maintained during deployment and decommissioning.
- Mandatory Fall Protection: Tethertarp Pty Ltd mandates that this system must only be deployed while using appropriate, compliant fall-protection equipment, including edge protection, scaffolding, or certified safety harnesses.
- Absolute Personal Injury Disclaimer: To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tethertarp Pty Ltd accepts no liability for personal injury, illness, psychological trauma, or death resulting from slips, trips, falls, or mishaps occurring during the handling, installation, maintenance, or removal of the Tethertarp system. The installer and their employer assume 100% of the operational physical risk.
2. What is Included in Your Bundle
- Tethertarp Heavy-Duty Gravity Tarp Sheet
- Official Tethertarp UV-Rated 340mm x 850mm Sandbags (Supplied Empty)
3. Required Materials (Sourced Separately)
- Clean, dry builder's sand, washed river sand, or rounded play sand.
- DO NOT USE: Blue metal, crushed rock, scoria, or sharp gravel (which will puncture the UV-rated bags).
- DO NOT USE: Garden soil, topsoil, or clay (which retains water, overweights the roof, and promotes material rot).
- High-quality 8mm UV-stabilised marine-grade rope (if required for perimeter anchoring).
- Hex-head roofing screws with EPDM rubber washers (for metal roof installations).
4. Sandbag Preparation
- Quantity: For a standard 6m x 6m tarp, a minimum of 25 sandbags is required. Larger tarps require proportionally more bags to maintain the 1.5-meter maximum spacing rule. The use of non-Tethertarp bags voids all warranties.
- Weight: Fill each bag strictly to 10–12kg of clean, dry sand. Overfilling puts excessive stress on tether points and risks overloading the underlying roof structure.
- Tying: Leave at least 350mm of unfilled space at the top of the bag. Spin the top of the bag tightly and secure it with a heavy-duty, tight overhand knot to prevent sand leakage.
5. Roof & Tarp Deployment
- Clear the Surface: Ensure the roof area is entirely free of sharp debris, loose nails, or jagged metal edges.
- Structural Support: If covering a large structural opening (e.g., severe tree damage), ensure the underlying roof structure is braced sufficiently with timber to prevent the tarp from sagging or pooling water.
- Orientation: Unwrap the tarp carefully. Ensure it is oriented with the integrated tethers and the Tethertarp logo facing upwards.
- Weight Distribution: Securely attach a prepared sandbag to every single integrated tether point. Work from the perimeter inward to ensure even weight distribution and prevent wind uplift during deployment.
- Perimeter Seal: Ensure perimeter sandbags sit flush against the roof surface along the outer edges of the tarp to create an effective wind barrier.
- Gutter Termination: Where layout allows, terminate the lower edge of the tarp directly into the gutter system to facilitate seamless water runoff.
- Suspended Weights (High Risk): If sandbags must extend past the roof edge due to a lack of tie-down points, they must rest securely on the ground or a solid lower structure. Do not allow 10–12kg sandbags to hang freely suspended in mid-air, as wind action can cause severe structural damage or rope failure. Ensure the drop zone below is entirely clear of pedestrian access.
6. Notice Regarding On-Site Modifications (Field Slicing)
Tethertarp is supplied as a fully engineered, continuous fabric matrix.
- The Factory Standard: The system is designed to be deployed intact, without any alterations.
- Field Cuts: If unique roof obstacles (such as plumbing vents, flues, or service penetrations) require you to cut, slice, or trim the tarp fabric on-site, you are modifying the product outside of factory specifications.
- Assumption of Risk: Any installer who elects to cut or alter the tarp assumes 100% of the risk and liability for the watertight integrity of those zones. Any cuts will instantly void the voluntary product warranty.
- Best Practice If Sliced: Keep the cut to the absolute minimum size required. Neatly fold the cut triangular edges upward against the pipe, and adequately seal and reinforce the collar using a heavy-duty outdoor tape of the installer's choice, entirely at the installer's own discretion and risk.
7. Extended Deployment & Maintenance Protocol (3 to 12 Months)
While Tethertarp is built to withstand extended temporary exposure up to a maximum of 12 months, it is not a set-and-forget solution. If insurance or construction delays require the tarp to remain deployed beyond 3 months, the property manager or builder must execute the following protocol every 90 days:
- Sandbag Integrity Check: Visually inspect all sandbags. Any sandbags showing signs of fraying, splitting, or loss of sand mass must be replaced immediately with fresh, approved Tethertarp sandbags.
- Tension Audit: Ensure the tarp has not shifted and no water pooling is occurring in sagging areas.
- Log Book: Keep a written and photographic record of these inspections. Proof of ongoing maintenance is required to validate any long-term product claims.
PART 2: PRODUCT QUALITY GUARANTEE & LIABILITY LIMITATION
1. Important Notice: Assumption of Risk & Professional Use Only
- Strict System Requirements: This product is designed to function exclusively as an interconnected system when installed strictly in accordance with Part 1 of this manual. Any deviation from these instructions constitutes
product misuse.
- Assumption of Risk: The installer and property owner acknowledge that roofing environments involve unpredictable variables, including wind gusts, microclimes, and structural shifts. By deploying this product, the installer assumes all risk regarding the secure anchoring of the system and its performance under local weather conditions.
- Exclusion of Leaks and Detachment: To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tethertarp Pty Ltd accepts no liability for water ingress, property damage, structural shifting, or the detachment of the tarp due to installer error, inadequate weighting, severe weather, or failure to monitor and maintain the installation.
- Maximum Liability Cap: To the maximum extent permitted by law, in the event that the product is proven to have a manufacturing defect, Tethertarp’s total liability is strictly limited to either: replacing the defective product bundle or refunding the purchase price of the product. Tethertarp is not liable for any structural damage, internal water damage, personal injury, or consequential financial loss to the property whatsoever.
2. 12-Month Manufacturer's Warranty
Subject to the limitations outlined in Section 1, Tethertarp Pty Ltd warrants that the product bundle (tarp sheet and supplied empty sandbags) will be free from faults in manufacture, construction, and materials for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase.
Products found upon inspection by an authorized Tethertarp representative to be defective within this 12-month window will be repaired or replaced with an equivalent product free of charge. Replaced items become the property of Tethertarp Pty Ltd.
3. Warranty Conditions
To make a valid claim under this warranty, the following conditions must be met in full:
- Proof of Purchase: The original dated invoice must accompany all warranty enquiries.
- System Integrity: The tarp must have been deployed exclusively with the official sandbags supplied in the original purchase bundle. Use of third-party weights or alternative bags voids this warranty.
- Pre-Installation Inspection: All tarps must be inspected prior to deployment. Claims for physical damage noticeable prior to installation will not be accepted once the product has been deployed on a roof.
- Claim Process: All warranty queries must be emailed to admin@tethertarp.com.au with detailed photographs and a description of the manufacturing fault.
4. Warranty Exclusions
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tethertarp Pty Ltd shall be under no liability for product failures, leaks, personal injuries, or damages resulting from:
- Unauthorized Modifications: Any cuts, punctures, trims, or structural modifications made to the tarp fabric, eyelets, or tether points by the installer (including field slicing for penetrations).
- Installation not in accordance with the provided manual instructions (including incorrect sandbag weights, improper fill materials, lack of fall protection, or wrong spacing).
- Re-use of the product on a subsequent project (this product is engineered strictly as a single-use emergency asset per project deployment).
- Single continuous deployments exceeding twelve (12) months.
